Master data management
5 leading Master Data Management solutions
Master Data Management (MDM) helps organizations create a consistent, trusted, and governed view of the core data shared across the organization. This often includes business entities such as customers, products, suppliers, locations, assets, and financial structures, as well as the reference data used to classify and manage them.
Choosing the right MDM platform should therefore begin with the business problem and the domains of master data you wish to master, not with a feature checklist or a preferred technology. A customer-data initiative has different requirements from a product-information program, financial hierarchy project, or enterprise reference-data service.
The organization’s operating model is equally important. Companies must determine who owns the data, who is responsible for stewardship, how governance decisions are made, and whether control will be centralized, distributed, or shared across business units. The platform should support that model rather than impose one that does not fit.
After years of working with MDM platforms and evaluating a wide range of tools, we have identified five leading solutions that address many of the most common enterprise use cases:
- ON EBX
- Semarchy Data Platform
- Reltio Multidomain MDM
- Informatica MDM and 360 Applications
- Stibo STEP
Each platform has different strengths. The right choice depends on the use case, data domains, operating model, technical environment, and maturity of the organization’s governance processes.
ON EBX
ON EBX (previously Orchestra Networks EBX) is part of Cloud Software Group, a portfolio of established enterprise software businesses. The platform was originally developed by Orchestra Networks, which was acquired by TIBCO in 2018.
EBX established its reputation as a flexible, model-driven platform for multidomain master data, reference data, and metadata. That architectural approach remains central to ON EBX today.
The platform enables organizations to model and govern multiple data domains (including customer, product, supplier, location, and reference data) within a common environment. It combines flexible data modeling with validation rules, permissions, workflows, hierarchies, and governance controls.
ON EBX is particularly well suited to organizations with complex or evolving data models. Rather than requiring every implementation to conform to a rigid, predefined structure, it allows teams to design governed data applications around their specific business requirements.
It is also a strong choice when master data, reference data, and metadata must be managed together, or when several business domains share common governance processes. This includes financial hierarchy management, where organizations must govern complex legal-entity, account, cost-center, organizational, and reporting hierarchies across multiple systems.
Advantages of ON EBX
- Flexible, model-driven architecture
- Strong multidomain MDM capabilities
- Integrated master data, reference data, and metadata management
- Well-designed interface for business users and data stewards
- Strong validation, permissions, governance, and workflow capabilities
- Adaptable to complex and evolving business requirements.
Semarchy Data Platform
Semarchy Data Platform, or SDP, brings together Semarchy’s master data management, data integration, data quality, governance, and data-delivery capabilities.
Semarchy xDM remains the platform’s core MDM technology, while the broader Semarchy Data Platform provides a unified framework for building, governing, and delivering trusted data products.
Semarchy is particularly well suited to organizations seeking an agile, application-oriented approach to MDM. Teams can build governed data applications around specific business requirements rather than beginning with a large, enterprise-wide implementation.
The platform supports customer, product, supplier, employee, location, reference, and other data domains. Its model-driven approach allows business and technical teams to define data structures, matching rules, survivorship policies, workflows, and stewardship applications around each use case.
Semarchy can therefore be a strong fit for organizations that want to begin with a focused business problem, demonstrate value, and expand their MDM program incrementally.
Advantages of Semarchy Data Platform
- Flexible, application-oriented architecture
- Rapid implementation and time to value
- Strong multidomain and relationship-management capabilities
- Integrated data quality, governance, enrichment, and workflows
- Accessible tools for business users and data stewards
- Supports focused projects and incremental MDM adoption.
Reltio Multidomain MDM
Reltio, an SAP company, provides a cloud-native platform for master data management and data unification. SAP completed its acquisition of Reltio in March 2026.
Reltio Multidomain MDM enables organizations to unify, standardize, govern, and distribute core data such as customer, product, supplier, location, organization, and employee data. The platform combines entity resolution, data quality, reference data management, governance, and graph-based relationship views.
Reltio is particularly well suited to cloud-first organizations that need trusted data to support operational processes in near real time. Its software-as-a-service architecture and API-based delivery model allow mastered data to be distributed to applications, analytics platforms, digital channels, and AI systems.
It is also a strong option for customer and other 360-degree use cases in which data must be continuously matched, updated, enriched, and made available across the enterprise.
Advantages of Reltio Multidomain MDM
- Real-time data unification and distribution
- Strong entity resolution and relationship management
- Flexible multidomain data model
- Integrated data quality, governance, and reference data management
- Scalable support for operational and 360-degree use cases.
Informatica MDM
Informatica, a Salesforce company, provides a broad portfolio of enterprise data management technologies. Salesforce completed its acquisition of Informatica in November 2025.
Informatica MDM and 360 Applications form part of the Informatica Intelligent Data Management Cloud. The product family combines multidomain MDM with specialized applications for customer, product, supplier, finance, and reference data.
Informatica is particularly well suited to large organizations that need MDM to operate as part of a broader enterprise data management architecture. Its MDM capabilities can be combined with Informatica’s data integration, data quality, cataloging, metadata management, governance, and privacy technologies.
This breadth is a significant strength for organizations with complex data estates, numerous source systems, multiple business units, and mature enterprise data programs.
However, that breadth can also increase implementation complexity. Organizations should clearly define the initial use case, governance model, operating structure, and deployment roadmap before beginning an Informatica MDM program.
Advantages of Informatica MDM and 360 Applications
- Broad and comprehensive enterprise functionality
- Support for multiple master data domains
- Specialized 360-degree applications
- Strong integration with data quality, governance, and metadata capabilities
- Suitable for large and complex enterprise environments
- Strong fit for organizations already using Informatica technologies
Stibo STEP
STEP is the master data management platform developed by Stibo Systems. Stibo Systems currently positions STEP as a Trusted Intelligence Platform that provides governed, semantically rich master data for business teams, applications, analytics, and AI agents.
STEP has a particularly strong history in product information and product master data management. It has expanded into a multidomain platform supporting customer, supplier, location, asset, and other enterprise data.
The platform is especially well suited to product-intensive organizations-including retailers, manufacturers, distributors, and consumer-goods companies-that must manage complex product hierarchies, classifications, attributes, digital assets, supplier relationships, and publication processes.
STEP can also support broader multidomain programs in which product, customer, supplier, and location data must be governed together. Its mature hierarchy, workflow, and data-modeling capabilities make it a strong option for large organizations with detailed and highly structured data requirements.
Advantages of STEP
- Mature and robust enterprise platform
- Particular strength in product and supplier data
- Strong hierarchy, classification, and relationship management
- Flexible multidomain capabilities
- Established fit for retail, manufacturing, distribution, and consumer goods
- Scalable support for complex data and governance processes
Start with the use case, not the software
The success of an MDM program is usually determined before implementation begins. Apgar helps organizations define the business problem, establish the right operating model, select the platform that fits, and carry the program through implementation.
